According to Wikipedia,
Temptation is a desire to engage in short-term urges for enjoyment, that threatens long-term goals.
I cannot but agree with this definition as I have come to discover that temptation is not a thing but the when and how.
It’s about timing. The battle is usually in the now or later, Instant gratification or delayed gratification.
The desire to have something is not in itself bad, but how will you get it or when do you want to get it…. That is where the temptation lies.
Why wait when you can get it now? Why go the hard way when you can get it easily?
God will not deny us any good thing but there is a time he has set in place for the fulfillment of His plan and purpose in our lives.
The TEMPTER is the devil and all he wants is for you to go against everything God has said and decreed.
God created sex and he says it is good but he has set it in the confinement of the marriage institution. So he says ‘wait till marriage before sex’… the devil says, ‘why wait till marriage when you can have it now?’ the devil further reminds you that you don’t even know when you will be getting married.
Also, money is in itself is good, but God says wait for me and I will bless you at the right time. He says start small and I will make you big, though your beginning may be small; your latter shall be great. The devil says ‘Why wait when you can cut corners? I can make you rich now now!’
The devil’s mode of temptation is pretty much still the same.
He met with Christ and the peak of his temptation with him was ‘bow down to me and I will give you all the earth’.
Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. “All this I will give you, he said, “if You will fall down and worship me.” Matthew 4:8-9
In other words, why go through the cross, why go through the suffering and shame of the cross to get back the world, just bow to me now and I will give it to you.
The devil will always come to strike deals with you, especially if God has promised you things in the future. God doesn’t tell you when the future will be, he wants us to trust his timing too. The process is usually not palatable and it can become quite unbearable at some points… then the devil comes to offer you a shortcut out. He promises to give u that future immediately.
One thing is definitely certain; the devil can never give you what God wasn’t planning to give you before. Once God promises you anything, it becomes yours, you can chose to wait till the time God has set to transfer it to you or like the prodigal son, you have the right to demand your inheritance immediately; before the set time… whichever way you want it, it belongs to you and it’s your right.
The devil comes to present your right to you and help you to demand it, or he present your inheritance to you before time as if he was the one giving it to you as a gift thereby makes it look like he was doing you a favor. He does no one favor, he only wants to cheat you of what is rightfully yours… he wants to steal your inheritance…. Don’t you allow him!
Remember, the temptation is not really the thing but lies in the when and the how.
